The physical arrangement of equipment, workstations, and infrastructure within a building. Layout significantly impacts RTLS design including anchor placement and coverage. RTLS data helps optimize layout by revealing traffic patterns and space utilization.

Physical arrangement of production areas, storage zones, equipment, and pathways within industrial facility, often represented digitally as foundation for RTLS visualization. In RTLS context, facility layout serves as: (1) Geographic reference - base map displaying real-time asset positions and movement paths. (2) Zone definition framework - boundaries for geofences, reporting areas, and process steps aligned with physical spaces. (3) Analysis tool - understanding travel distances, identifying inefficient layouts, and planning improvements. (4) Planning tool - simulating layout changes and predicting impact on material flow and travel distances. Facility layout documentation includes: building outline and dimensions, interior walls and barriers, equipment positions (stationary machinery, shelving, workstations), pathway widths (aisles, corridors), door and gate locations (entry/exit points affecting movement), elevation changes (ramps, stairs, mezzanines), and zone designations (production areas, storage, shipping, restricted zones). Layout data sources: CAD drawings from facility design (preferred, providing precise dimensions), as-built surveys (measuring actual constructed facility), or manual mapping (tracing on site).

RTLS systems import layout files in common formats: DWG/DXF (AutoCAD), PDF with georeferencing, or image files (PNG, JPG) with scale calibration. Accurate facility layout is critical for: precise position visualization, meaningful analytics (dwell time by area, travel distance calculations), and effective geofencing. Layout updates required when facility modified - major reconfigurations requiring complete RTLS commissioning, minor changes (equipment moves) requiring geofence adjustments only.
