Active Tag
A battery-powered tracking device that actively broadcasts signals containing its unique identifier and optional sensor data. Transmits at defined intervals (e.g., every 1-10 seconds) for real-time location tracking. Used for tracking forklifts, containers, equipment, and personnel. Battery life typically ranges from 2-7 years.
Location tag containing a battery to actively transmit signals, as opposed to passive tags that only respond to external interrogation. Active tags enable longer range (30-100+ meters), higher update rates (up to 10 Hz), and additional sensor integration. In industrial RTLS, active tags typically consume 5-50 mW, providing 3-7 year battery life. Tag weight ranges from 20-80 grams. Advanced active tags integrate accelerometers (for motion detection and power saving), temperature sensors, or push buttons for emergency alerts.
Key trade-offs include higher cost ($25-100 per tag) and maintenance requirements for battery replacement versus passive alternatives, but superior performance for tracking mobile assets and personnel requiring real-time sub-second updates.
